Jesus’ Blood Was Shed For You

Must Know Bible Basics /

There are many Christian hymns about the blood of Christ. If you have been saved any length of time you have heard such timeless classics such as “What can wash away my sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus”, “Would you be free from the burden of sin?“, “There’s power in the blood”, “Covered by the blood“, and “Are you washed in the blood of the lamb.

The blood of Christ is a necessary part of salvation. The bible says that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. The blood is the very element that grants us eternal life by eliminating the penalty of sin which is death that was upon us prior to being savedSadly, many hymn books and even some modern bibles have removed references to the blood, choosing instead to simply talking about the death of Jesus.

While blood is necessary for the remission of sins, not just any blood will do. The bible teaches in (Exodus 34:7) that while God can forgive iniquity and sin, His forgiveness will still not clear the guilty from the penalty of sin. In the Old Testament animal sacrifices were offered, however they were not able to wash away sin permanently. This is why the sacrifices had to be offered over and over again.

The bible also plainly declares that the life of the flesh is in the blood. Without blood there is no life. If you talk to a doctor it would stun you to learn just how many diseases are blood-related in some way.

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood (Acts 20:28).

When Christ died on the cross, it was not just the blood of a mortal being that died. The bible says in (Acts 20:28) that the blood shed on Calvary was God’s blood. This is a further proof that Jesus was not simply a good man, a great moral teacher, nor was He some created divine being like the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons teach. The truth is that Jesus is infinitely more than what so many are claiming Him to be. The person that hung on that cross was God Himself, even Satan knows that (Luke 4:12).

The significance of this verse found in Acts cannot be overstated. In fact, to this day the word “bloody” is one of the strongest curse words in the British language. During the dark ages, people referred to Queen Mary as “bloody Mary.” Many historians have mistakenly believed the phrase referred to all of the Christians she burned at the stake and that she had blood on her hands. The reason she was known as “bloody Mary” was a reference to (Acts 20:28). They were cursing her by the blood of God.

The reason we need a savior is because our sins have been committed against an eternal God. Because of this the only payment that is acceptable would be one offered by an eternal being. God, in the form of Jesus Christ came to earth to live as a man in order to be the mediator between God and man. It is only because He was God manifest in the flesh that we can have salvation.

There is power in the blood of Jesus to set you free from sin as well as to break the power of sin which has been dominating your life. If it turns out that you are trapped into your own sins, the good news is there is hope. You can be set free completely by placing your faith in Jesus Christ by accepting the gift of pardon that He purchased with His precious and unblemished blood on the cross on your behalf.
