Why God Allows Trials — And How They Work for Your Good

Faith in God /

If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, “Why is this happening to me?”, I want to tell you that you’re not alone. Many believers struggle to understand why God allows trial after trial to enter their lives, especially when they are trying to live faithfully.

Life doesn’t always go the way we expect it to go. Moreover, the circumstances won’t always align themselves in such a way to make life easy for us.

We face heartbreak, setbacks, disappointments, sickness, financial pressure, spiritual dry seasons, and sometimes, unexplainable pain.

And in those moments, it’s natural to wonder:
Why would a loving God allow this?

Understanding why God allows trials doesn’t automatically remove the pain, but it can give you peace of mind and purpose in the middle of it.

1. Trials Aren’t a Sign That God Has Left You

When life gets hard, the enemy wants you to believe that God is either distant or punishing you. But that’s not the truth.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me…” — (Psalm 23:4)

God is not absent in your trial. He is present. In truth, He is closer than you even realize.

Trials aren’t a sign that God has abandoned you. Sometimes, they are proof that He is actively at work in you.

2. God Uses Trials to Grow Your Faith

“Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — (James 1:2–3)

One reason why God allows trials is to develop spiritual maturity.

Faith isn’t forged in comfort, it’s forged in fire.

Just as gold is refined in high heat, our faith is refined in hardship. God isn’t punishing you; He’s preparing you for something greater.

He’s making you stronger. He’s teaching you to trust Him more deeply. He’s shaping your character for what’s next.

3. Trials Reveal What’s Really in Our Hearts

In smooth seasons, it’s easy to feel like we’re spiritually strong. But trials reveal our true foundation.

“These [trials] have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith… may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” — (1 Peter 1:7)

Your reactions during trials show what’s really inside. Do you run to God for sustenance or away from Him? Do you respond in fear or faith?

God uses hardship to lovingly expose anything in us that we may not even be aware of that’s not aligned with His heart, so that He can have us deal with it by surrendering it to Him.

4. Trials Teach Us to Rely Fully on God

“We were under great pressure… so that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.” — (2 Corinthians 1:8–9)

Sometimes the answer to why God allows trials is this: To remind us we can’t do life alone.

Trials strip away our self-reliance and force us to trust in His strength, not ours. They position us to receive His grace and power like never before.

When you’re at the end of yourself, you’re at the beginning of God’s best work.

5. Trials Open Doors for Ministry

Your pain has a purpose beyond you.

“[God] comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble…” — (2 Corinthians 1:4)

God never wastes a tear. He often allows trials so that, in time, your testimony becomes someone else’s survival guide.

The thing that nearly broke you may be the very story that brings someone else to a relationship with Jesus.

6. Trials Draw Us Closer to Jesus

When life is easy, it’s tempting to drift away due to comfort. But in suffering, we often experience the nearness of Jesus in the most intimate way because we are compelled to seek His face for a divine intervention.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — (Psalm 34:18)

If you’re in a hard season right now, lean in. Let it be a time of deeper worship, praise, deeper dependence, and deeper love.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing God does in a trial is not fixing your situation but transforming you in the middle of it.

7. Trials Are Temporary, But Their Rewards Are Eternal

“Our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever.” — (2 Corinthians 4:17)

This life isn’t the end. Whatever you’re facing is temporary; however, the faith, strength, and endurance you’re building will echo into eternity.

Heaven remembers how you trusted God in the fire.

Final Encouragement: You’re Not Alone in the Trial

If you’re walking through a trial right now, hear this:

God sees.
God knows.
God cares.
And God is with you.

You may not understand why, and yet you can still trust Him.

He’s not finished. He’s working behind the scenes. And one day, you’ll look back and see how He used even this for your own good.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…” — (Romans 8:28)

🙏 A Prayer in the Midst of Trials

“Father God, I don’t always understand why I’m going through this. But in the midst of all this, I choose to trust You because of Your faithfulness.

Lord God, I ask that You strengthen my faith. Your Word promises that our present sufferings will yield glory that vastly outweighs them and that will last forever; therefore, I choose to look beyond what I am going through now with assurance.

Use this trial to grow me, shape me, and draw me closer to You. Remind me that You are working all things for my good. I surrender this daunting season into Your mighty hands. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
